We tried all the usual suspects, video first because this type of behavior smacks of video. However, it wasn't video. I was told he would format and re-image the machine as a last resort and we were almost at that point. Then I remembered, Autodesk told me a while back that the Ribbon icons are heavily dependent on the .NET Framework, so using the Add/Remove Programs feature in Control Panel, we did a repair on .NET Framework 3.5 sp 1, rebooted and it worked!
Autodesk programs rely heavily on your graphics card and .NET Framework.
